HOW BIG IS THE LAGO COLONY WEB SITE?

SCROLL DOWN TO SEE THE LATEST STATISTICS

March 3, 2009

The Lago Colony web site was launched on December 22, 2004.  If you would like to see the web site as it first appeared on that day CLICK HERE.
If you looked at the web site as it first appeared you will see a lot of changes and also that it has grown.
Now, let me give you some of the statistics on the size of the web site.
The web site today has 17,845 pages and it continues to grow as information is sent to me.  That count was as of today, the 3rd of March 2009.  There are 12,697 photos on the web site as of today.  As for the photos, some of them are duplicate copies so the actual count of individual photos is somewhat less, but still a very substantial number.
Over the past 16 months, I am not counting March 2009 in these numbers, the site has been visited an average of 11,022 times each month.  That is not to say that many different persons have visited the site, only that the site has been visited that many times.  For example, were you to view the site five times in a month, that would register as 5 visitors, although it would be the same person visiting the site.  It is impossible to tell from the numbers how many different persons have visited the site.

The  hit counter shows that, on average, when a person visits the site they look at 13.42 pages on each visit. (Note: May 1, 2010 with the new server this hit counter is not longer available.)

Think of it this way.  (REMEMBERING, SOME PAGES ARE LONG SO YOU HAVE TO SCROLL DOWN, OTHERS ARE SHORT AND NO SCROLLING IS REQUIRED TO SEE THE ENTIRE PAGE.) If you took 10 seconds to look at each page it would take you 49 hours to look at all the pages on this web site.
So how big is the web site?  It is very, very big and it grows larger each month.  Lets see how big it can get, just keep sending in the information and I will keep adding it to the web site.  It is up to you.
You may wonder how long it has taken to develop the web site.  I began about a month before I published the site so I have been working on it since November 2004.  That is 53 months or 1590 days, more or less.  I spent a lot of time on the development and in the first year, probably 4 to 6 hours a day.  Now I spend about 2 hours a day checking the site and making sure the links are all working and answering emails with questions about the site.  I would say on average I have spent 3 hours a day on the site, so there are around 4,770 hours worth of work put in on the site over a period of a little over four years.  This time also includes a lot of time learning how to do things on the web.  It is my part time retirement job and I love it.  It keeps me busy and I have learned a lot about using a computer.
What I really find interesting are the people I hear from who have never been to Aruba but are interested in Aruba and have connections to Aruba and Lago.  Some are grandchildren of people who worked there and say there remember their grandfather or grandmother telling them stories about Aruba. Some have people who are interest in the birds of Aruba, some are shell collectors and like the photos of the shells, some have an interest in the French escapees from Devils Island.  Most of the people I hear from are like me, they lived in Aruba or they live there now.  Some I knew, some I only remember in name and others were there before me or after me, but I like to hear from them all and try and answer their emails.
Now that you know how large the site is; if you want to take a look there is a weeks worth of work plus 9 hours overtime to look at the entire site, so have fun.

May 1, 2010 UPDATE
Today the web site is showing it takes up 4.41 GB of space and consists of 38,837 files or pages,  which are contained in 1,233 folders.
Today the site, at 38,837 pages, is up from 17,854 a year ago, an increase of 20,983 pages.   This is because the pages are much shorter that the ones of the past.  By using .pdf files an entire book is now considered one page by file and page count.
All that information is contained in 1,233 folders.
As to number of photos; there are 13,655 photographs on the web site as of today, which is over a thousand more than were on there a year ago.
How long would it take to look at the entire web site today?
Lets say you spent ten (10) seconds looking at each page; this is not giving you enough time to really look at the page let along read what is on a page but we will still use that as a beginning point.  At ten seconds per page it will take you 107 hours to look at the entire web site.
If you spent eight hours a day looking at the web site at only looked at each page for ten seconds you would be busy for 14 days.  But you would be finished by around noon on the 14 day.
IF YOU HAVE 14 DAYS WITH NOTHING BETTER TO DO, WELL, ENJOY THE WEB SITE; AND REMEMBER, IF YOU FIND A PROBLEM LET ME KNOW SO I CAN FIX IT.

JUNE 13, 2011
Just the numbers.  Just compare the numbers and you can see how much it has grown.
Size: 11.1 GB
120,755 Files
3,511 Folders
As I say, it just keeps growing, and growing and growing.
And it is all because of you, the contributors who keep sending my information.
So, keep up the good work and when you have something you think of interest pertaining to Aruba, Lago and the mid 1900's just send it to me.  I do not promise to use all the material, but if it is of interest to others and pertains to the subjects, I will use it.

MAY 2, 2013
