JEAN ALEXANDER [SUTHERLAND]

My name is Jean Alexander [Sutherland].I went to live in Aruba in 1948 with my mother and sister Christine.  My father was a marine engineer on the deep sea tankers, and then moved on to the lake tankers.
We moved into bungalow 500. A house on a caliche island. It looked like a box on long legs because the oil pots seemed to be higher than the rest of the bungalows, because there was no garden and no patio.  I grew lots of plants in the porch.
When we arrived the open air theater was just across the road also the school and the club. My first teacher was Miss Constance.  I thought she was wonderful.
We lived in 500 for five years, until the company decided that the house would make a good youth club. So we moved to bungalow 201.
201 was a lovely house with lots of mature plants and trees in the GARDEN .I was over the moon living there .Rogers beach was just down the road .the commissary was near by and the Girl Scout hut was at the bottom of the garden.  My happiness did not last long, as my mother wanted me to be educated in Scotland. I was 12 years old and it was deemed the right time to return to Scotland.  My father stayed on to work on the tugboats as the lake fleet was being reduced [1954] and more natives were to be trained to work on the tugs.
I have attached a photograph of the class I was in, in 1954 .It is the 6th grade at the elementary school.  I hope you can use it.
