Dr. and Mrs. Russell Carrell moved to Aruba in 1932.  Dr. Carrell was a surgeon who, at first, due to there only being a few medical staff in Aruba, did every thing, from surgery, to colds, to delivering babies. The photograph to the right show Dr. Carrell with Queen Juliana of the Netherlands when she paid a visit to Lago and the some of the doctors and staff from the Medical Department.  First from a floor in a building next to the new refinery, moving to a building near the refinery, and then to the new hospital on the hill. Dr. Carrell helped plan and build the first new hospital on the hill as will as the three story addition which was added much later. Dr. Carrell spent his whole career in Aruba after graduating from Rush Medical School and the University of Chicago Residency Program at Cook Hospital Chicago.  When the Carrell's first moved to Aruba they lived in a bungalow near the hospital. on the lower road.  Then they moved to Bungalow 271, (click on Bungalow 271 to go to that page) right next to the path and stairs going down to the tennis courts and New Esso Club. The Carrell’s lived in Bungalow 271, (that is Bungalow 271 in the photograph to the right) until 1960 when Dr. Carrell retired and moved to Florida. Dr. Carrell became medical director for Standard Oil during WW-II and continued in that position until his retirement.
The Carrell’s have four daughters:

Nancy and Ruth Carrell (now Nancy Bridges and Ruth Newman), the eldest and are twins.  (One of the first sets of twins to be born in the colony) The photograph below, to the right is the Carrell family.
