2012 Year Of The Shoco – The Year of Wisdom!
Every bird its beak…
Yet they cannot speak…
So, let us speak for them
Birds are not protected in Aruba
And we hope that 2012 will be their year
When you get a chance
Speak to your favorite politicians
And ask them to help protect our birds
Our fauna and our flora
Ask them to get nature conservation on the agenda
They are the decision makers
And
You can help make a difference
Scroll down and enjoy the different beaks of some of our birds
Remember, you can speak for them
And please share this email with all your friends
Thank you for caring

This baby Pied-billed Grebe was just recently born; see the white tip on its beak, used to get out of its egg. Two other chicks are hiding under its mother's wings. Two eggs left to hatch. Unconditional love.
Now it's our turn to show our nature some love too.
You can make a difference.

On February 13th, 2012, the Aruban artist Armando Goedgedrag visited Aruba’s Minister Plenipotentiary in The Hague, the Honorable Edwin Abath, to present him with a painting he made of Aruba’s Shocos (Burrowing Owls, Holenuil, Athene cunicularia arubensis). He made an appeal for the Shoco to become Aruba’s National Bird and requested the assistance of the Government of Aruba to help prevent Aruba’s Shoco from going extinct.
Armando is studying in the Netherlands, in Friesland, and travelled to The Hague on his mission, where he was treated with great dignity by the Minister.
As is his style, he made a ‘speedpainting film’ of his art in progress and this time he ended his short film with the moment the Minister and his staff receive the painting. He attained support from the band Datapanic, who made one of their songs available for the cause.
Armando is a nature lover and is reaching out a hand (and his heart) to help save the Shoco from extinction. There are only an estimated 200 pairs left of this Aruban endemic subspecies.
Armando is studying Communication and Multi-Media Design and he is 22 years old.
